Day 170

A little history lesson about the Source of the Nile river...the Nile that ends up in Egypt is a combination of two Niles, the White Nile and the Blue Nile. The two rivers converge in Khartoum, Sudan, and continue on to the ocean. The beginning of the Blue Nile is at Lake Tana, Ethiopia. Some say the headwaters of the White Nile is at the edge of Lake Victoria in Jinja, Uganda.  Others claim that the true source of the White Nile is not in Uganda, but in Burundi where a feeder river goes into Lake Tanganyika. This spot is marked by Livingstone Rock, a little bit south of Bujumbura, where Stanley and Livingstone carved the date of November 11, 1871 into this large rock, now known as Livingstone Rock. Because of our two missions, we have now visited all three sources of the Nile!!! Guess our next mission will be to Egypt to see how it all ends up!

I made Dad put away his pocket knife..he thought he should add "Wilkes" to the rock.

This picture is after a 4 hour round trip ride on an unbelievably pot-holed bumpy road up to the top of a tall mountain to check on a new water project we are doing in Burundi.

  1. You are such troopers driving on a bumpy pothole road for four hours!!! I don't know how you guys do it!!! But if I HAD to ride in the back seat on a ride like that, I'd want Elder Wilkes to be at the wheel! That's for sure!! And I'd probably want a fresh cold diet pepsi provided by Sister Wilkes and some Out of Africa honey cashews to munch on! Now that sounds like a lot of fun:)! Miss you guys!

  2. Hopefully you received a certificate to prove that this is not just 2 hours of fancy Photoshop work.
