Day 98

April 7 marks the 18th anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. All across the country, purple is draped on buildings and worn as clothing, as it is the mourning color. Businesses were closed today, and many Rwandans traveled from their homes back to their villages to pay respects to their loved ones. This period of mourning will continue, in varying degrees, for the next week, and even throughout the next 100 days to acknowledge that 1 million were killed in 100 days. To pay our respects, we visited two of the memorials in a locale about 1 hour south of Kigali, and viewed a film about the genocide in the evening. Seeing the sites where mass murder was committed is extremely sobering, and viewing the remarkable recovery and reconciliation that has occurred in Rwanda among her people is a miracle.
